Longest British series adds its first Muslim family
Coronation Street, the longest-running television soap opera in the UK. Released over 50 years ago. will incorporate a Muslim family for the first time as part of its character cast.
The producers confirmed that the daily adventures of the inhabitants of Coronation Street will include those of the new neighbor Khalid Kal Nasir. whose “relatives” will arrive throughout the year .
Kal, played by Jimi Mistry, is a widowed fitness trainer with two children. While his father, Sharif, will be actor Marc Anwar.
The actors who will play the rest of the family have not yet been chosen.
“Kal and his son and daughter live with his mother and father. So we will bring them to the streets. And this will be the first Muslim family to have Corrie (nickname of the series). It is strange, right?” , stated producer Stuart Blackburn.
Set on a street in the fictional town of Weatherfield. In northern England, Coronation Street premiered on British television in 1960. And is considered the world’s longest running daily series still in production.
Another popular British soap opera is Eastenders , set in an East London neighborhood, which incorporated its first Muslim family , the Masoods, in 2007.
These series are often criticized for not reflecting the cultural variety of the areas they represent, working-class areas where many Muslims and other minorities live today.
